The collections in the department of Western European art, the oldest in the Hermitage, are notable for their exceptional richness. They include paintings, sculptures, drawings, and engravings, various items of applied art, coins and medals from different countries.

It should be mentioned that in the Hermitage are kept only originals, among them works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, Poussin and other great masters of the past.

At the present time the following exhibitions are open to view: Western European Applied Art: 11th – 15th centuries. Italian Art: 13th -18th centuries. Spanish Art: 16th- 17th centuries. Art of the Netherlands: 15th – 16th centuries. Flemish Art: 17th century. Dutch Art: 17th century. German Art: 15th – 18th centuries. French Art: 15th-20th centuries. English Art: 17th -19th centuries.

Art of European Countries and of the United States of America: 19th – 20th centuries.

Western European Arms and Armour: 15th – 17th centuries. Western European Tapestries: 15th – 18th centuries.

Western European Carved Stone: 12th-19th centuries.

Western European Porcelain: 18th – 20th centuries.

Western European Jewellery: 16th-19th centuries (Gold Room).
