Pulkovo Observatory

The Pulkovo Observatory is located on the Pulkovo Heights. It was designed in 1827 by Vasily Yakovlevich Struve. He became the first director of the observatory.

At the foot of the Pulkovo mountain is one of the entrances to the the observatory, right there is the entrance to the military cemetery “Pulkovskoye”.

The hill is 74 meters high, the whole staircase does not fit in the frame.

On the stairs you can see a mosaic: Sun, Saturn and the Moon.

Observatory gates is located at the top of the hill, next to the bus stop.

If you walk from the foot of the mountain to the gate along the Pulkovo Highway, you can see the grotto fountain “Old Man”, designed in 1807 by Voronikhin A.N.

Near the main building there are four small pavilions built in 1947-1953 under the project of Shchusev A.V. and Svetlitsky P.P. Pavilions designed for short-focus double astrograph and a normal astrograph.
